Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has intensified its regulatory oversight by shutting down 44 food manufacturing facilities across the country. The closures, which were part of a coordinated nationwide enforcement exercise conducted in July 2026, targeted businesses failing to meet essential safety and licensing standards. Among the affected establishments are sachet water producers and cold stores found to be operating under unhygienic conditions or without the necessary regulatory approvals required to ensure public health safety. Particular focus was placed on the Ga East and Ga West Municipalities, where inspections revealed a troubling pattern of non-compliance. One prominent case highlighted by the Authority was the closure of Virgen Natural Mineral Water, located in Ashongman. The facility was found to be operating without a required license, a direct violation of the Public Health Act. The FDA noted that many of these unlicensed operations were manufacturing products in environments that posed significant risks to consumers, lacking both the structural integrity and sanitary protocols mandatory for food production. Mrs. Rhoda Ewurabena Appiah, the FDA’s Head of Communications, emphasized that the enforcement drive is a core part of the Authority's commitment to protecting the Ghanaian public. She stated that the FDA would not compromise on food safety standards and urged all manufacturers to strictly adhere to regulatory requirements. According to the Authority, the exercise—which spanned from July 14 to July 24—was designed not only to penalize offenders but also to identify and sanitize the industry by removing non-compliant operators who bypass legal channels. The FDA has issued a stern warning to all food and beverage manufacturers, reminding them that operating without a valid license or in unsanitary conditions will result in immediate sanctions and facility closures. Moving forward, the Authority plans to continue its rigorous monitoring of food establishments to ensure that the food and water consumed by citizens meet the highest quality standards. Consumers are also encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious manufacturing activities to the FDA to support the national effort in maintaining a safe food supply chain.
