The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has officially launched a Yellow Fever Reactive Vaccination Campaign across three districts in the Upper West Region. Starting on October 14, 2026, the five-day initiative aims to immunize approximately 244,869 residents against the viral disease. The campaign specifically targets the Wa West, Sissala East, and Sissala West districts, where health authorities are working to curb a recent outbreak and prevent further transmission within the communities.
Health officials have designed a comprehensive distribution strategy to ensure the vaccination reaches the widest possible audience. The exercise focuses on individuals aged between nine months and 60 years. To achieve this, trained health workers have been deployed to established public health facilities and strategically located temporary vaccination posts in high-traffic public areas. For residents in more isolated locations, mobile teams are traversing remote communities to ensure that geographical barriers do not prevent access to the life-saving vaccine.
As part of the protocol, every person who receives the vaccine will be issued a yellow vaccination card to serve as official proof of immunization. The GHS has emphasized that this documentation is vital for health records and potential travel requirements. Public health officials are urging all eligible residents to participate fully in the exercise, noting that high vaccination coverage is the most effective way to establish herd immunity and protect the broader regional population from the dangers of yellow fever.
The campaign, which concludes on October 18, represents a critical reactive measure in Ghana’s public health strategy. By focusing resources on these three specific districts, the Ghana Health Service aims to contain the current outbreak before it spreads to neighboring regions. This proactive approach underscores the government's commitment to disease surveillance and rapid response in the face of infectious disease threats, ensuring that community health remains a top priority.
