A cohort of sixty-one Ghanaian health workers has departed for Grenada to begin two-year service contracts under the government’s Labour Export Programme. The group, consisting primarily of nursing professionals, left the country following a formal send-off ceremony where government officials emphasized the strategic importance of this mission. This initiative marks a significant step in the administration's efforts to formalize the export of skilled labor while addressing the global demand for Ghanaian healthcare expertise.
Addressing the departing professionals, the Minister of Labour, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, underscored the weight of their responsibility as ambassadors of Ghana. He urged the health workers to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and conduct, noting that their performance in Grenada would directly influence future opportunities for other Ghanaian professionals. Minister Agyekum highlighted that there is a substantial international appetite for Ghanaian nurses, and maintaining a stellar reputation is crucial for the sustainability of the Labour Export Programme.
The Chief of Staff, Dr. Julius Debrah, also spoke at the event, cautioning the workers against the temptation to abandon their contracts or yield to external pressures once abroad. He reminded the group that their success is tied to the prospects of those who will come after them. The government views these bilateral arrangements as a structured way to manage the migration of skilled workers, ensuring that both the individuals and the nation benefit from the experience and remittances gained.
This deployment to Grenada is part of a broader strategy to expand Ghana's footprint in the global labor market. Beyond the Caribbean, the government has already finalized recruitment agreements with the United States. Additionally, officials indicated that negotiations and expressions of interest are ongoing with other nations, including Trinidad and Tobago and Germany. By formalizing these pathways, the government aims to provide Ghanaian professionals with secure international career advancement opportunities while strengthening bilateral ties with partner nations.
