Ghana's National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has officially launched a critical stage of its "Target the Podium" initiative, with the national Para Powerlifting team set to compete in the 2026 International Para Powerlifting Competition in the Russian Federation. This participation serves as a cornerstone of the nation’s strategic preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. By securing international competition slots years in advance, the NPC aims to build the necessary momentum and technical proficiency required for Ghanaian athletes to secure medals on the world stage.
The Ghanaian delegation for the event consists of five members, featuring three elite athletes: Francis Kwaku, Nfodzo Patrick, and Obeng Samuel. Supporting the competitors are Lead Coach Toulassi Frank and Assistant Coach Oheneadu George. The competition, scheduled for August 8–9, 2026, will provide these athletes with a high-stakes environment to test their strength against global peers. Following the two-day event, the team is scheduled to depart from Russia on August 10, marking the conclusion of this specific developmental phase.
Under the leadership of NPC Ghana President Samson Deen, the "Target the Podium" initiative emphasizes the necessity of continuous exposure to high-level sporting environments to develop confidence and competition readiness. Deen has encouraged the athletes to view their journey as part of a larger mission to achieve success on the world stage. The program is designed to equip Ghanaian para-athletes with the international experience and competitive mindset required to transition from mere participation to becoming consistent podium contenders.
As Ghana continues its road to the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles, this proactive approach by the National Paralympic Committee underscores a broader commitment to excellence in sports development. By fostering a culture of early preparation and professional coaching, the NPC aims to ensure that the nation's athletes are mentally and physically prepared for the rigors of the Paralympic Games. The success of this mission in Russia is expected to provide valuable data and experience to refine the training regimens of Ghana’s para-sporting stars in the years leading up to 2028.
