Ghana Police to Launch TraffiTech-GH Automated Traffic Enforcement Nationwide on November 1, 2026

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has finalized preparations for the nationwide rollout of TraffiTech-GH, a sophisticated automated traffic law enforcement system scheduled to launch on November 1, 2026. Initially slated for an October release, the commencement was rescheduled to allow for extensive public education on the new technology. The system utilizes a network of cameras and sensors to monitor vehicle speeds and traffic light compliance, automatically issuing Electronic Notices of Violation (ENV) directly to the mobile phones of offending motorists. Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng confirmed that the technology is robust and capable of operating offline during connectivity interruptions, marking a significant shift from traditional manual enforcement to a digital-first approach.

Under the new protocols, emergency and security vehicles from recognized agencies will be exempt from speeding tickets during the discharge of their authorized duties. These vehicles will be identified through a central database to ensure they are not penalized while responding to emergencies. However, the GPS clarified that private vehicles not registered as emergency units will be ticketed for violations. To ensure the accuracy of the automated ticketing process, the police have strongly advised vehicle owners to update their ownership records at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). This step is critical to prevent previous owners from being held liable for offenses committed by new owners of sold vehicles.

Beyond automated enforcement, broader efforts are underway to enhance road safety through institutional collaboration. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has empowered its station masters to conduct rigorous inspections of commercial vehicles before they depart from stations. According to GPRTU member Eric Lantey Lamptey, these inspections include checks on tyres, brakes, lights, and general vehicle condition to complement the DVLA's regulatory work. This initiative coincides with the DVLA's strategic goal to transform the Volta Region into a model road safety zone, where improved compliance and better infrastructure for heavy-duty trucks are expected to drastically reduce recurring accidents.

The drive for enhanced safety standards extends into the maritime sector as well, reflecting a comprehensive national focus on transport security. The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), in partnership with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), recently conducted a capacity-building workshop for seafarer examiners to align Ghana's maritime practices with evolving global technologies. As Ghana transitions toward these tech-driven enforcement and safety systems, the Ghana Police Service emphasized that manual traffic management will continue to operate alongside TraffiTech-GH, ensuring a multi-layered approach to reducing road fatalities and improving driver discipline.
