The Ghana Police Service has announced the full-scale implementation of its automated traffic law enforcement programme, known as TRAFFITECH-GH, scheduled to commence on October 1, 2026. This initiative marks a transformative shift in the nation’s approach to road safety and law enforcement, moving toward a digitally integrated system designed to monitor and regulate driver behavior across Ghana’s road networks. By leveraging modern technology, the police aim to create a more efficient and transparent method of ensuring compliance with traffic regulations and reducing the reliance on manual intervention. Central to the TRAFFITECH-GH system is the deployment of advanced cameras and Personal Data Assistant (PDA) devices across strategic locations. These tools are engineered to detect a variety of traffic offenses automatically, capturing real-time data on violations such as speeding, jumping red lights, and other reckless driving behaviors. One of the most significant changes under this new regime is the introduction of electronic notices. Rather than relying solely on traditional roadside stops by officers—which can often lead to traffic congestion and human interaction challenges—offenders will receive notifications of their fines via SMS and other digital platforms, streamlining the entire penalty process. This modernization effort is expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of the Ghana Police Service by providing a consistent and objective means of enforcement. The use of automated systems reduces the potential for disputes at the roadside and ensures that every violation is documented with photographic or digital evidence. As the October 2026 deadline approaches, the programme is anticipated to foster greater discipline among motorists, ultimately leading to a reduction in road-related accidents and fatalities. This move aligns with broader national efforts to digitize public services and improve the overall safety and reliability of Ghana's transport infrastructure.
