Ghana Vaccinates Nearly 10,000 Pets in Major September Rabies Campaign Targeting 2030 Elimination Goal

Ghana has successfully vaccinated 9,456 pets as part of a concentrated nationwide rabies campaign launched in September. The initiative, which is a collaborative effort between the Veterinary Services Department, local assemblies, and private veterinary service providers, aims to reach a total of 40,000 animals by the conclusion of the exercise. This mobilization is a cornerstone of the nation’s strategic health objective to eliminate all dog-mediated human rabies deaths by the year 2030, aligning Ghana with international public health targets.

As part of the campaign’s modernization efforts, Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Emmanuel Allegye-Cudjoe announced the launch of a new national pets vaccination card system. This innovation is designed to streamline the tracking and reporting of vaccinations, ensuring a more reliable database of protected animals across the country. To support this infrastructure, more than 500 health personnel have undergone specialized training in rabies case management. This educational component ensures that frontline workers are equipped with the latest protocols for identifying and treating potential rabies exposures, thereby strengthening the community-level response to the virus.

In addition to the vaccination drives and clinical training, the government has rolled out extensive public education programs to bridge the awareness gap regarding zoonotic diseases. Health officials are emphasizing that rabies is a preventable disease, provided that pet owners adhere to strict annual vaccination schedules. By integrating private sector expertise with public health resources, the campaign seeks to create a sustainable model for animal disease control. The Veterinary Services Department continues to urge all pet owners to participate in the ongoing exercise to ensure the safety of their households and the broader Ghanaian public.
