Ghanaian Schools and Universities Advance to Final Stages of National Academic Competitions

The academic competition season in Ghana is reaching a fever pitch as several major national contests move into their decisive stages. From tertiary institutions to junior high schools, students across the country are demonstrating intellectual prowess in business, science, mathematics, and literacy. These competitions, which have become a staple of the Ghanaian educational calendar, aim to foster excellence, critical thinking, and teamwork among the youth while providing a high-profile platform for institutional pride and academic recognition.

At the university level, the eighth edition of the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC) has narrowed its field to six formidable semi-finalists following intense quarter-final matchups in Accra. The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), University of Cape Coast (UCC), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Pentecost University (PU), Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), and Accra Technical University (ATU) are the institutions remaining in the hunt for national honors. Notable performances during the quarter-finals included UCC’s dominant victory over Academic City University and a narrow triumph by KNUST over Valley View University. The TBSC remains a critical fixture for enhancing students’ practical knowledge in finance, economics, and business management.

Simultaneously, the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is transitioning into its high-stakes One-Eighth stage. A total of 81 schools, comprising 49 automatic qualifiers and several high-scoring runners-up, will battle across 27 grueling contests. Scheduled to run from August 26 to August 28, 2026, this stage will determine the 27 schools that will advance to the quarter-finals. The NSMQ continues to be the nation's most-watched academic competition, pitting the best science students against each other in a series of intense intellectual exchanges that captivate audiences nationwide.

On the junior level, the 2026 Literacy Challenge, organized by Channel One TV and Citi FM, has announced its Top 10 regional teams. Following a rigorous aptitude test that evaluated contestants aged 11 to 15, the top 30 individual performers have been grouped into teams for the regional stage. The upcoming quiz competition, slated for September 5 and 6 in Accra, will see these young scholars vie for a grand cash prize of GH₵15,000 for the winning regional team. Beyond the team prize, an overall outstanding contestant will be recognized, highlighting the competition's dual focus on individual academic brilliance and collaborative problem-solving.

These competitions reflect a broader commitment within the Ghanaian educational sector to move beyond traditional rote learning toward more interactive and competitive forms of knowledge acquisition. As these contests progress, they not only offer students the chance to win significant prizes but also help bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. With the semi-finals and knockout rounds approaching for the TBSC, NSMQ, and Literacy Challenge, the nation watches as the next generation of business leaders, scientists, and writers emerge from these prestigious platforms.
