Technical Universities Prioritize Innovation and Practical Skills to Bridge Ghana’s Employability Gap

Technical universities across Ghana, including Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) and Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), are leading a strategic shift toward practical, innovation-led education to better prepare students for the modern job market. During high-profile events held in October 2026, university administrators and industry leaders emphasized that academic certificates alone are no longer a guarantee of employment. Instead, the focus has shifted toward "industry-ready" skills, technological adaptability, and an entrepreneurial mindset designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the demands of the digital economy.

At the CCTU Career Fair, themed "Creating Careers in the Digital Age," Derrick Akomprah, CEO of Elite B & C Company, challenged students to prioritize soft skills over mere academic qualifications. He noted that while degrees are foundational, traits such as a positive attitude, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are what truly distinguish successful candidates in a competitive environment. Akomprah further urged students to embrace emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) as tools for innovation rather than threats. He encouraged graduates to look for opportunities within the local Ghanaian economy and explore entrepreneurship rather than immediately seeking prospects abroad.

In a similar effort, Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) launched its 2026 Inter-Faculty Technology and Innovation Fair at the Adako Jachie Campus to showcase research-driven solutions. Vice Chancellor Professor Gabriel Dwomoh reiterated the institution's commitment to producing graduates who can apply theoretical knowledge to solve real-world challenges. The fair featured participation from various faculties, including Engineering, Creative Arts and Technology, and the Built and Natural Environment. By providing a platform for students to present their technological innovations, the university aims to foster direct collaboration with industry stakeholders and community partners, thereby enhancing student employability.

These initiatives at CCTU and KsTU reflect a broader trend in Ghanaian higher education to prioritize Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a driver for national development. By moving beyond traditional rote learning and emphasizing hands-on experience and industry engagement, these institutions are preparing a new generation of professionals capable of not only filling existing roles but creating new ones. The push for entrepreneurship and practical innovation serves as a critical strategy to address graduate unemployment and ensure that Ghana’s workforce remains resilient and relevant in an increasingly automated global economy.
