The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has announced that the utility company plans to procure 72,000 water meters to enhance its billing operations and consumption monitoring. Speaking during a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting on 13 October, Mutawakilu explained that the procurement is a vital component of the company’s efforts to improve efficiency in tracking water usage and ensuring accurate billing for consumers across the country.
Mutawakilu addressed the committee regarding previous challenges in the procurement process, noting that an earlier attempt to acquire the meters had been unsuccessful. He attributed this delay to GWL’s stringent quality control and testing standards. According to the Managing Director, the company maintains a rigorous testing regime to ensure that all equipment meets the necessary technical specifications before being deployed. This focus on quality is intended to prevent the installation of faulty meters that could lead to revenue losses or customer disputes over inaccurate readings.
Beyond the immediate procurement, GWL is working toward a broader modernisation of its infrastructure. Mutawakilu revealed that the company aims to implement remote meter reading technology by early 2027. This system is expected to streamline operations by allowing the utility to monitor consumption levels remotely, reducing the need for manual readings and the potential for human error. The successful acquisition and deployment of the 72,000 meters are seen as a critical step toward achieving this digital transformation and improving the overall reliability of Ghana’s water billing system.
