Dr. Gideon Boako Urges Government to Fund Free SHS via Domestic Revenue, Not Loans

CHASS urges government to release Free SHS funds and settle arrears

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has formally requested the government to expedite the release of funds for the Free Senior High School (SHS) program. Speaking at the group’s 64th Annual National Conference, leadership emphasized that the persistent delay in financial disbursements is creating significant operational hurdles for school administrators across the country. The association highlighted that the current funding model requires more consistency to ensure that schools can meet their basic obligations and maintain educational standards. Beyond the immediate release of current funds, CHASS is calling for the settlement of all outstanding arrears owed to various educational institutions. The heads of schools noted that these debts have accumulated over time, straining school budgets and making it increasingly difficult to manage daily operations and fulfill vendor payments. During the conference, members also pointed to the need for a comprehensive review of financial measures and procurement processes, arguing that the current systems are often too rigid or slow to respond to the urgent needs of senior high schools. The association warned that these financial constraints are not merely an administrative issue but are beginning to impact student welfare. According to CHASS, the lack of timely funding undermines student discipline and academic performance, as schools struggle to provide necessary resources, maintain facilities, and create a conducive learning environment. The group urged the government to treat the clearing of these arrears as a priority to prevent further deterioration of the school system’s administrative capacity. As the 64th conference concludes, the heads of assisted secondary schools are seeking a concrete commitment from the government to address these recurring financial bottlenecks. The appeal comes at a time when schools are navigating a demanding academic calendar, making the prompt disbursement of Free SHS grants essential for the smooth running of the academic year. The resolution of these funding issues is seen as critical to the long-term sustainability of the government's flagship education policy and the success of students nationwide.
