Ghana National Association of Teachers Issues September 7 Strike Ultimatum Over Promotions and Service Conditions

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has officially issued a stern ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service (GES), setting a deadline of September 7, 2026, to resolve a series of long-standing grievances affecting its members. Following a high-level meeting held on August 7, the association expressed deep frustration over systemic delays in teacher promotion placements and the failure of government bodies to address critical career progression issues. GNAT warned that if the government fails to provide a roadmap and take concrete actions by the specified date, the association will be forced to initiate industrial action across the country.

Central to the dispute is the delayed implementation of promotion placements for thousands of teachers who have already met the requirements for higher ranks but have yet to receive formal recognition or the corresponding financial benefits. GNAT is demanding that the GES expedite all outstanding promotion placements no later than August 31, 2026, as a prerequisite to meeting the final September deadline. Furthermore, the association is calling for a structural reform to decouple administrative bottlenecks from career advancement opportunities, ensuring that teachers are not unfairly penalized by bureaucratic delays in the processing of their professional upgrades.

Beyond promotion issues, GNAT is raising alarms over the expiration of the Collective Agreement that governs the conditions of service for teachers in Ghana. The agreement officially lapsed on July 31, 2026, leaving educators in a state of professional uncertainty regarding their welfare and employment protections. The association is urging the government to prioritize the swift renewal of this document to ensure clarity and maintain labor peace within the education sector, emphasizing that the protection of their members' interests is non-negotiable.

The potential strike comes at a critical juncture for the Ghanaian education system, as the September deadline coincides with the anticipated preparations for the academic calendar. Should GNAT proceed with industrial action, it could lead to significant disruptions in classrooms nationwide. While the GES and the Ministry of Education have yet to issue a formal response to the ultimatum, stakeholders are calling for immediate dialogue to address the teachers' concerns and avert a total shutdown of public schools.
