The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched an intensified fire safety and inspection campaign across several municipalities in the Eastern Region, including Akropong, Asamankese, and Suhum. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the incidence of fire outbreaks and bolster public emergency preparedness by shifting from reactive firefighting to proactive prevention. By engaging directly with residents and businesses, the GNFS seeks to ensure the community is better equipped to identify and mitigate hazards before they escalate into emergencies. Central to this campaign is a door-to-door sensitization strategy designed to reach citizens in their homes and workplaces. Personnel from the GNFS are providing practical education on critical safety topics, such as the proper handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and the safe management of electrical systems. Residents are also being trained on the correct use of fire extinguishers, a vital skill that can prevent minor incidents from becoming total losses. These direct engagements allow fire officers to identify specific risks and provide immediate, tailored advice to occupants. In the Asamankese municipality, the Fire Safety Education Team recently concluded a specialized four-day exercise focusing on both public and private institutions. This phase involved rigorous inspections of safety protocols and equipment within schools, offices, and commercial centers to ensure compliance with national standards. Simultaneously, in Suhum, fire safety officials emphasized the importance of clear evacuation procedures and LPG safety, ensuring that public spaces are prepared for swift and orderly movement in the event of an emergency. This regional push is part of a broader nationwide strategy by the GNFS to instill a permanent culture of fire prevention within Ghanaian society. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility for public safety, the service hopes to move beyond traditional emergency response. As high-activity periods often see a spike in fire cases, the GNFS continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the safety guidelines provided during these educational tours.
