Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Targets Hepatitis and Malaria in Major Awudua Health Outreach

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) has intensified its community health efforts by conducting a large-scale quarterly medical outreach program in Awudua, located in the Western Region. This initiative, which saw the participation of over 100 health professionals, focused on combating the high prevalence of Hepatitis and malaria within the mining firm's host communities. The outreach underscores the foundation’s long-standing commitment to improving the general well-being and health outcomes of local residents through direct medical interventions, health education, and administrative support.

Dr. Magdalene Bakari, the Lead Specialist for Health Services at Gold Fields Ghana, spearheaded the educational component of the event, emphasizing the urgent need for Hepatitis prevention. She highlighted that chronic Hepatitis has become endemic in the region, posing a significant public health threat, particularly through mother-to-child transmission. Dr. Bakari reassured residents that vaccines are readily available for Hepatitis B and effective treatments exist for Hepatitis C, urging the community to take advantage of screening services to ensure early detection and management of the virus.

Beyond Hepatitis education, the outreach addressed the persistent challenge of malaria, which remains a leading cause of illness among children in the area. In addition to medical screenings for various conditions, the foundation provided free medications to those in need. The initiative was further bolstered by partnerships with Unilever Ghana, which distributed personal hygiene products to promote preventive health, and Diagnostic Centre Limited. A significant milestone of the program was the successful registration and renewal of 265 residents for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), ensuring sustained access to professional healthcare services beyond the duration of the outreach.

This latest health drive is part of a broader legacy of service, as the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation marks over 25 years of contributing to the development and health of its host communities. By combining preventative education with immediate clinical care and social interventions like NHIS registration, the foundation aims to create a more resilient community health framework. The success of the Awudua outreach reflects a collaborative model between corporate entities, health professionals, and local authorities to address pressing health disparities in Ghana’s mining regions.
