The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a significant consignment of suspected cannabis weighing 560.4 kilograms at Torve, near Akatsi in the Volta Region. The seizure, which occurred on October 15, 2026, involved 1,065 parcels of the illicit substance with an estimated street value of approximately GH‵11.2 million. The operation was spearheaded by the Aflao Sector Command’s Preventive Monitoring Unit following a period of intelligence gathering regarding a suspicious vehicle moving through the area.
According to officials, the driver of the vehicle attempted to evade the Customs team upon spotting them during the monitoring exercise. However, a mechanical failure forced the suspect to abandon the transport near Torve and flee the scene on foot. Upon inspecting the abandoned vehicle, officers discovered that it carried falsified registration plates. Crucially, a Ghana Card was recovered from the interior of the vehicle, providing authorities with a significant lead in their attempt to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspect.
The seized parcels are scheduled to undergo forensic laboratory testing to confirm the exact nature of the substance. GRA officials have described the operation as a major success in disrupting illegal drug trafficking networks within the Volta Region. The Aflao Sector Command has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders and intensifying surveillance to prevent the smuggling of contraband goods. Investigations remain active as security agencies work to track down the individual linked to the abandoned cargo and the falsified vehicle.
