The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has summoned the leadership of the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) and heads of technical universities to a crunch meeting on October 28, 2026. This intervention follows nearly a month of industrial action by the association, which began on October 1. The meeting is part of a concerted effort by state regulators to resolve the ongoing strike and restore normal operations within the nation’s technical education sector.
The high-level discussions are set to take place at 10:00 a.m. at the GTEC Conference Hall. Attendees will include Vice-Chancellors, Finance Directors, and Registrars of all technical universities, alongside representatives from TUTAG. According to the commission, the primary goal is to foster constructive dialogue and find a definitive solution to the concerns raised by the teachers. GTEC has emphasized that the cooperation of all stakeholders is essential for maintaining institutional harmony and upholding standards of academic excellence.
Ahead of the GTEC meeting, TUTAG will convene an Extraordinary Congress on October 26, 2026. During this session, the national executive will present proposals from the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities Ghana (VCTU-G) regarding a potential suspension of the strike. TUTAG leadership has expressed gratitude for the vice-chancellors' mediation efforts and has urged local chapter chairpersons to engage with members to build consensus on the proposed settlement.
The call for a resolution has been echoed by the Vice-Chancellors, who have publicly appealed to TUTAG to return to the classroom. The VCTU-G warned that the prolonged industrial action is significantly disrupting academic calendars and negatively impacting the welfare of students. While the vice-chancellors acknowledged the legitimacy of the teachers' grievances, they stressed the importance of dialogue and requested assistance from the Ministry of Education to facilitate a swift conclusion to the impasse.
