GTEC Flags Over 100 Unrecognized Institutions and Issues Urgent Directive on College Admissions

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a dual-front regulatory update to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s higher education sector. In a sweeping move to protect prospective students, the Commission has flagged over 100 tertiary institutions operating without official recognition as of September 2026. This crackdown coincides with a critical directive to legitimate Colleges of Education to begin their 2026/2027 academic year admissions immediately, bypassing current delays in fee structure approvals to ensure the academic calendar remains on schedule.

The warning regarding unrecognized institutions stems from significant quality assurance concerns identified by the Commission. GTEC has urged the public to exercise extreme caution before enrolling in these entities or accepting their academic credentials, noting that qualifications from such schools may not be valid for employment or further study. The Commission emphasized the necessity for prospective students to conduct thorough due diligence by verifying the accreditation status of any institution through official GTEC channels before committing financial resources or beginning programs of study.

Parallel to this enforcement action, GTEC Director-General Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai has instructed all recognized Colleges of Education to commence the 2026/2027 admission process despite the fact that the new fee structure has not yet been formally sanctioned. In a letter dated September 30, 2026, the Commission authorized these institutions to utilize the approved fees from the previous 2025/2026 academic year as a temporary measure. This directive, which was also communicated to the Minister for Education, is intended to prevent administrative bottlenecks and ensure that the next cohort of teacher trainees can begin their education without undue delay.

These combined actions highlight GTEC's role in balancing strict oversight with operational flexibility. While the Commission continues to prune the educational landscape of sub-standard and illegal operators, it is also prioritizing the continuity of the state’s established teacher training pipeline. For students and parents, the current climate underscores a period of high alert; they are encouraged to take advantage of the newly opened admission windows at recognized colleges while remaining vigilant against the 100-plus unaccredited schools currently operating in the shadows.
