Hohoe MP and Officials Appeal for Urgent Aid After River Dayi Floods Displace Over 3,000 Residents

Severe flooding in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region has displaced more than 3,000 residents after the River Dayi burst its banks following heavy rainfall. The disaster has impacted over 400 homes across several communities, with the Zongo neighborhood being the hardest hit, where more than half of the area remains submerged. Although the heavy rains have subsided, local authorities report that water levels have continued to rise, further complicating rescue and relief operations and straining the resources of the Municipal Assembly.

The scale of the crisis has forced hundreds of families into temporary accommodations, with over 700 residents currently taking refuge in classrooms provided by the Ghana Education Service. Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has described the situation as dire, noting that many displaced persons have lost nearly all their personal belongings and livelihoods. Municipal Chief Executive Prosper Kumi added that while no lives have been lost, the destruction of approximately 400 households has created an overwhelming humanitarian need that requires immediate national intervention.

In response to the emergency, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has commenced the distribution of essential relief items. Pascal Agbagba, the Volta Regional Director of NADMO, confirmed that mattresses, food, mosquito nets, and cooking oil are being provided to affected households, with over 1,000 additional mattresses being mobilized from the national office. Volta Regional Minister James Gunu has assured the people of Hohoe that the government is fully committed to supporting the impacted communities and has dispatched teams to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage.

Beyond immediate relief, local leaders are calling for long-term solutions to prevent a recurrence of the disaster. MCE Prosper Kumi has requested heavy machinery to dredge the River Dayi, citing the need to improve the river's capacity to handle future overflows. Additionally, health officials are collaborating with the Ghana Health Service to monitor the temporary shelters for potential disease outbreaks. As the community begins the slow process of recovery, MP Tsekpo continues to appeal to private organizations and individuals to support the displaced families who remain without stable shelter.
