Imagination Africa and the Mentors Chess Academy are scheduled to host the second edition of the African Genius Chess Championship on October 24, 2026. The competition, set to take place at Ghud Park within the Accra Mall, aims to foster critical thinking and intellectual development among Ghanaian youth. By providing a platform for competitive play, the organizers seek to identify and nurture young talent while promoting the game of chess as a vital educational tool.
The championship is rooted in a philosophy of social inclusion and equal opportunity. Mariam Mahamah, the co-founder of Imagination Africa, emphasized that the initiative is designed to bridge socio-economic gaps, asserting that talent is not dictated by a child's financial background. She noted that on the chessboard, every player begins with the same pieces and the same opportunities, making it a powerful equalizer for children from diverse backgrounds across the country.
This year's event follows a successful inaugural edition held in 2024, which saw participation from more than 150 students representing 15 different schools. That tournament produced notable highlights, including a 12-year-old player who remarkably secured the title in the Under-20 category. The 2026 edition will maintain this inclusive spirit by featuring multiple age categories, ensuring that players of various skill levels and developmental stages can compete for prizes and recognition.
Beyond the immediate competition, the organizers intend for the African Genius Chess Championship to become a permanent fixture on the national youth development calendar. By focusing on critical skills such as strategy, patience, and problem-solving, the event serves as more than a sports tournament; it is part of a broader effort to equip the next generation with the cognitive tools necessary for future success. The championship remains open to children from all backgrounds as Imagination Africa continues its mission of youth empowerment through strategic gaming.
