Elder Jabulani Tafari, a veteran musician and Rastafari activist, has called on African governments to officially recognize members of the diaspora as returnees rather than immigrants. Speaking at the 6th Rastafari Continental Summit in Lagos, Nigeria, Tafari argued that the current classification of diaspora Africans as foreign immigrants is inconsistent with broader continental goals regarding justice and historical reconciliation. The summit, held from October 13 to 17, focused on the theme of African unity and the ongoing conversation surrounding reparations for the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Tafari highlighted that treating returning Africans as foreigners contradicts the advocacy of leaders like President John Mahama, who has been a vocal proponent of seeking reparations for the historical injustices of slavery. The activist suggested that granting returnee status is a logical step in acknowledging the right of those in the diaspora to reconnect with their ancestral roots without the bureaucratic hurdles faced by typical immigrants. Beyond the status of returnees, the summit featured discussions on the necessity of continental collaboration. Keynote speaker A.J. Dagatola addressed the gathering, criticizing divisive religious practices that he argued have historically hindered African unity. Participants emphasized the need to look past internal divisions to foster a stronger, more integrated continent. The event also included the Livity Awards, which celebrated significant contributions to the Rastafari movement and reggae music, reinforcing the cultural links that bind the global African community. The gathering in Lagos serves as a precursor to future mobilizations within the movement. Organizers announced that the next Rastafari Continental Summit is scheduled for 2030 in Ethiopia. This future date is strategically chosen to coincide with the centenary of the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie I, a pivotal figure in Rastafari history. The summit concluded with a renewed call for African states to enact policies that facilitate the return and integration of the diaspora as a means of strengthening the continent's social and economic fabric.
