Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang Reviews Changing of the Guard as Government Addresses Regional Security and Development Concerns

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang presided over the 46th Ceremonial Changing of the Guard at Jubilee House on September 14, 2025, commending the Ghana Armed Forces for their unwavering discipline and professionalism. During the ceremony, the Ghana Air Force officially assumed security responsibilities from the Ghana Navy for the next three months. This high-profile rotation occurred as the government continues to advance national security infrastructure, including the acquisition of 76 acres of land in Akyem Oda by the Ministry for the Interior. The site, provided by the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, is designated for a new training depot for the Formed Police Unit (FPU), a move the Omanhene of Akyem Kotoku, Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, praised for its potential to boost local security and economic activity.

In the Ashanti Region, the government has intervened in a local dispute regarding the 24-hour model market project in Mankranso. Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene and Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Xoese Dogbe announced a suspension of construction following concerns that the project might necessitate the demolition of a nearby school. While District Chief Executive Abubakar Sedik clarified that the market and the unused classroom facility are distinct, the government has halted work to ensure no educational infrastructure is compromised. The community has been tasked with identifying a more suitable site to ensure the development project proceeds without social friction.

Simultaneously, the administration is navigating a sensitive security situation in Bawku following the death of Issaka Abdulai, a lecturer at Gbewaa College of Education. The lecturer’s family has threatened legal action against the state, alleging that he died following an assault by military personnel while returning home during curfew hours on September 11. To ensure transparency, the Inspector General of Police has ordered a special autopsy at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. This investigation comes at a time when political discourse is also shifting toward the 2027 elections, with public figures beginning to weigh in on candidate support and the role of financial influence in future campaigns.

These combined events reflect a complex week for the Mahama administration, balancing the promotion of military excellence with the practical challenges of local governance and the necessity of security accountability. As the government reviews site suitability in Mankranso and awaits the autopsy results from Bawku, the focus remains on maintaining public trust through transparent administration and the steady expansion of essential security services across the nation.
