Kabaka Foundation Commissions GH¢1.3 Million Mental Health Unit at Eastern Regional Hospital

The Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua has received a significant boost to its psychiatric care capacity with the inauguration of a new GH¢1.3 million mental health unit. Funded and constructed by the Kabaka Foundation, the 35-bed facility has been named the Nana Owiredu Wadie I Mental Health Unit. The handover marks a critical intervention in the region’s healthcare infrastructure, specifically designed to address the growing demand for specialized mental health and substance abuse treatment services in a modern, well-equipped environment. The newly commissioned unit is equipped with a range of essential amenities to ensure comprehensive patient care and rehabilitation. Beyond its 35-bed capacity, the facility features dedicated consulting rooms, specialized wards, and recreational areas intended to foster a holistic recovery process for patients. By providing a separate, purpose-built space, the unit aims to improve the dignity of care for individuals struggling with mental health conditions, ensuring they receive treatment in a setting tailored to their specific medical and psychological needs. The necessity of this project is underscored by alarming statistics shared by health officials during the opening ceremony. The Eastern Region has witnessed a steady and sharp increase in mental health cases over the past decade, rising from 3,200 recorded cases in 2016 to an anticipated 6,264 cases by 2025. This surge has placed immense pressure on existing facilities, which were previously ill-equipped to handle the volume and complexity of patients presenting with various psychiatric disorders and substance-related issues. While the new unit provides a vital physical resource, regional health officials used the inauguration to highlight broader systemic challenges. They emphasized that the lack of adequate mental health resources and the shortage of trained professionals remain significant hurdles to effective service delivery in the region. The Nana Owiredu Wadie I Mental Health Unit is seen as a foundational step toward bridging this gap, but stakeholders have called for sustained government and private sector support to ensure the facility is adequately staffed and maintained to meet the region's evolving healthcare needs.
