A late-night inferno at the High Tension area in Kasoa has destroyed 15 container shops and triggered a violent confrontation between angry residents and personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service. The fire, which broke out under circumstances suspected to involve an electrical fault, razed the commercial structures before emergency teams could arrive to contain the spread.
The delay in response was attributed to mechanical failures at the closest fire stations. According to officials, the fire tenders at both the Kasoa and Buduburam stations were out of commission due to breakdowns, forcing the service to rely on equipment from further away. Upon their eventual arrival, frustrated residents met the firefighters with a barrage of stones, venting their anger over the perceived negligence and the resulting loss of property.
Shadrach Boakye Yiadom, the Assemblyman for the area, condemned the attack on the firefighters while acknowledging the distress felt by the victims. He explained that while the community's frustration was rooted in the slow response, attacking emergency responders only hampers their ability to save lives and property. He called on the government to prioritize the provision of reliable equipment and well-maintained fire tenders for the rapidly growing Kasoa municipality.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the blaze was sparked by an electrical fault, though a full assessment is still underway. Beyond equipment shortages, local authorities have highlighted severe congestion in the High Tension area as a significant hurdle for emergency services. There are now growing calls for better spatial planning and the potential evacuation of unauthorized occupants in the area to prevent future tragedies and ensure that fire engines can navigate the community effectively.
