The Ghana Police Service has launched an intensive manhunt for five inmates who escaped from the Konongo police cells through a hand-dug hole. The breach, which occurred in the station’s washroom area, allowed six fugitives to flee the facility. While security forces successfully apprehended one of the escapees in Kumasi, five others remain at large, prompting a regional search operation to secure their return to custody.
Investigations revealed that the inmates managed to burrow through the cell walls via the connected washrooms, exploiting a structural weakness in the detention facility. The Asante Akim Central Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr. Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, confirmed the details of the escape and noted that the re-arrest of one fugitive provides a critical starting point for tracking the remaining group. Authorities are currently examining the circumstances of the breach to determine if there were any lapses in supervision during the incident.
In the immediate aftermath of the escape, the Municipal Assembly has moved to bolster security at the Konongo police station. Dr. Aidoo announced that measures are already being implemented to reinforce the cells and install advanced surveillance systems, including CCTV cameras and enhanced external lighting. Furthermore, there are ongoing discussions regarding the construction of a new, more secure police station to better serve the municipality and prevent future security breaches. The police have called on members of the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the five fugitives.
