President John Dramani Mahama has officially broken ground for the construction of a transformative multi-purpose car park and hotel complex at Accra International Airport's Terminal 3. This ambitious project centers on a seven-storey facility featuring 2,030 parking bays, designed to operate on a fully cashless and ticketless system. By utilizing automated vehicle capture and digital payment options, the development aims to eliminate congestion and enhance security through integrated CCTV surveillance. The project is a cornerstone of the government's strategy to modernize airport infrastructure and improve the overall passenger experience as traffic continues to grow. Supporting the car park is a major hospitality and commercial expansion. The complex will house two distinct hotels: a 120-room five-star luxury hotel and a 250-room three-star affordable hotel, catering to a diverse range of international travelers. An 80-meter pedestrian skybridge will link these facilities directly to Terminal 3, alongside a shopping mall, food court, and banking services. President Mahama emphasized that the project is being funded internally by the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), rather than relying on central government funds. This development is timed to meet a surge in aviation demand in Ghana. Passenger traffic at the airport has risen from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025. Complementing the infrastructure push, GACL Managing Director Yvonne Afriyie Opare announced that Air Uganda and Etihad Airways are set to launch operations in Accra in October 2026 and March 2027, respectively. These additions are expected to further boost connectivity and solidify Accra's status as a competitive aviation hub in West Africa. Slated for completion within 24 months, the project represents a significant shift toward diversifying revenue streams through non-aeronautical operations such as retail and premium hospitality. By integrating advanced technology and modern amenities, the initiative positions the airport to handle future growth while providing world-class convenience to both domestic and international travelers.
