Mahama Administration Extends Fuel Price Relief Amid Calls for Tax Reform and Bernard Mornah's Disclosure of GRA Resignation

The administration of President John Mahama has extended the GH¢2 per litre reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel into the first pricing window of September 2025. This decision, marking the government's third recent intervention, is aimed at mitigating the financial impact on motorists and businesses as international crude oil prices continue to surge. Despite this relief, the current price of diesel remains around GH¢17 per litre, leading to calls for more sustainable economic measures. Collins Adomako-Mensah, the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, has urged a broader review of petroleum taxes and levies, warning that projected increases of 4.80% for petrol and 2.10% for diesel necessitate a shift away from temporary interventions toward structural tax reform.

In political transparency developments, Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has publicly detailed the circumstances surrounding his 2023 resignation from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). Mornah admitted that his departure from his role as an account officer was prompted by struggles with managing office funds, which he reportedly shared with associates or "his boys." He explained that he chose to resign to avoid potential legal repercussions and the risk of arrest, a disclosure that has sparked conversations regarding the financial integrity of political leaders heading into upcoming electoral cycles.

Adding to the discourse on political accountability, Ghanaian actress Efia Odo has stated that she has moved away from public confrontations with the NDC government. Reflecting on her evolution as an activist, she noted that constant public attacks on politicians often fail to achieve desired societal changes and expressed a desire to avoid being used as a pawn in partisan battles. Meanwhile, the government is facing a humanitarian appeal from the family of Nash Amoonu Jailor. The family has petitioned Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to facilitate the repatriation of the remains of their son, an IT professional who was tragically murdered during xenophobic attacks in South Africa earlier this year.

On the international stage, a significant shift in European politics occurred as Iceland voted against resuming membership talks with the European Union. In a referendum with a high turnout of 82.5%, approximately 52.8% of voters rejected the proposal to restart accession negotiations that had been paused for over a decade. The outcome was largely driven by national concerns over the protection of Iceland's fishing industry and sovereign rights. This decision reflects a broader global sentiment regarding the prioritization of national identity and economic independence over regional integration, paralleling the domestic debates in Ghana over resource management and economic sovereignty.
