President Mahama Leads National Tributes for Ambassador Victor Gbeho and Distributes GH"13.87m Compensation to Helicopter Crash Families

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to honoring national service by presiding over two significant ceremonies: the presentation of a GH₵13.87 million compensation package for families of the 2025 military helicopter crash victims and a state funeral for the late diplomatic titan, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho. These events, held at the Jubilee House and the State House in Accra, highlight a unified national effort to support the bereaved and immortalize those who have dedicated their lives to the service of Ghana and the West African sub-region.

In a solemn ceremony at the Presidency, President Mahama presented statutory compensation totaling GH₵13,872,962.40 to the families of eight public officials and military officers who perished in a helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom on August 6, 2025. Beyond the statutory payouts, the President announced the establishment of GH₵1 million educational trust funds for each eligible child of the deceased and a GH₵3 million healthcare insurance plan through Nationwide Medical Insurance. The initiative was bolstered by a national wave of solidarity, with corporate entities and individual donors contributing over GH₵10 million to the Children’s Support Fund. The President assured families that trust accounts have been secured for minors to ensure their futures remain protected despite the tragic loss of their guardians.

Simultaneously, the nation bid farewell to Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, who passed away on June 13, 2026, at the age of 91. President Mahama, joined by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and other high-ranking officials, led tributes at a state funeral honoring the man who served as Ghana’s Foreign Minister and President of the ECOWAS Commission. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that a facility within the new Foreign Affairs ministerial block will be named in Gbeho’s honor to immortalize his five decades of diplomatic service. Dignitaries, including former Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba, gathered to reflect on Gbeho’s legacy of integrity and his pivotal role in regional integration and international peacebuilding.

These acts of state-led remembrance signify a broader administrative focus on social security for public servants and the preservation of Ghana’s diplomatic history. During a Requiem Mass at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, former Foreign Minister Hannah Serwaa Tetteh and other speakers emphasized the importance of mentorship, noting how Gbeho’s example should guide the next generation of civil servants. By combining substantial financial support for the families of fallen heroes with high-level honors for veteran statesmen, the Mahama administration seeks to foster a culture of patriotism and national gratitude that transcends the immediate grief of these losses.
