President Mahama Outlines Global Reform Agenda and Prepares for 2027 AU Chairmanship

President John Dramani Mahama is positioning Ghana as a central force in African diplomacy as the nation prepares for his 2027 chairmanship of the African Union (AU). A High-Level Committee of Experts, led by Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has officially submitted five comprehensive reports to the Presidency. These documents provide the strategic framework, priority pillars, and a detailed work program designed to ensure that Ghana’s upcoming leadership is transformative rather than merely ceremonial. The committee's work is seen as a pivotal step in establishing Ghana's influence and commitment to advancing a clearly defined African agenda.

In a parallel push for global equity, President Mahama has called for a significant restructuring of the United Nations Security Council. Speaking in an interview with TRT World, the President proposed that Africa be granted five permanent seats, with one allocated to each of the continent's five geographical regions. Mahama emphasized the need for a united African front to secure this representation first, suggesting that discussions regarding the contentious issue of veto powers should be handled separately to avoid stalling progress on membership reform. He believes that a fairer representation in the UN's highest decision-making body is essential for the continent to have a meaningful voice in global peace and security.

Complementing his diplomatic agenda, President Mahama is advocating for an "Accra Reset" to end Africa's historical "dependency syndrome." This economic vision focuses on shifting the continent away from the reliance on external aid and the export of raw materials toward local processing and value addition. By developing local manufacturing capacities, Mahama argues that Africa can retain value, create jobs, and achieve true economic independence. He has linked this self-reliance directly to political influence, while also addressing the importance of reparations for historical injustices and seeking equality in all international relations.

On the domestic front, the President’s administration has successfully revived the stalled Saglemi Housing Project to address the nation's affordable housing needs. Developer LMI Holdings has committed to completing the first 700 housing units by March 2027, with a total of 1,500 units expected by the end of that year. During a recent site visit, President Mahama highlighted the project as a critical component of his government’s commitment to urban development and infrastructure, including new road and rail connections. These combined efforts across international diplomacy and domestic development signal a robust and ambitious agenda for the Mahama administration's current term.
