President John Dramani Mahama has officially opened the 10th Triennial World Assemblies of God Congress in Accra, marking the first time in the fellowship's 115-year history that the event is being held on the African continent. Addressing a gathering of over 10,000 participants from across the globe, the President called on religious institutions to translate spiritual values into tangible actions that support national development and social justice. The congress, themed "Commissioned, One Mandate, Every Nation," serves as a global platform for discussions on the Church’s mission and its evolving role in community service.
During his keynote address, President Mahama urged the clergy and congregants to prioritize integrity, honesty, and compassion in their daily lives. He emphasized that faith must be manifested through practical service to humanity, advocating for a "moral independence" within churches that allows them to challenge injustice and alleviate suffering. He specifically called on public officials to discharge their duties with humility and transparency, noting that the Church holds a vital responsibility in fostering responsible citizenship and ethical leadership within the country.
The President also highlighted the unique challenges facing the youth in an era of rapid technological advancement. He urged families and the Church to serve as mentors, providing godly counsel and creating supportive environments where young people can find purpose and seek answers to complex questions. Mahama stressed the importance of equipping the younger generation to fulfill the Great Commission, while also recognizing the significant contributions of women within the church and in humanitarian efforts across the continent.
The event featured significant recognition for the President and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama. President Mahama received an award for being the first member of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship to hold the office of President, while the First Lady was honored for her extensive humanitarian work. Rev. Dominic Yeo, Global Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, and Rev. Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Ghana, both noted the shift of Christian missions toward the Global South. Rev. Yeo specifically lauded Ghana's stability and the government's support in hosting the historic gathering at the Accra International Conference Centre.
