President Mahama Oversees South Africa Evacuation as Trump Envoys Launch Ukraine Peace Mission and U.S. Strikes Iranian Tankers

President John Mahama has overseen the successful repatriation of nearly 2,000 Ghanaians from South Africa, marking a significant domestic achievement amidst a week of intense global political and military maneuvering. While Ghana focuses on citizen safety, the international stage is dominated by high-stakes diplomacy in Europe and retaliatory military actions in the Middle East. Top U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Moscow to initiate peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, while U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted precision strikes against Iranian oil carriers in response to maritime aggression in the Strait of Hormuz.

The diplomatic mission by Witkoff and Kushner represents a major effort to mediate the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both warring nations agreeing to a temporary three-day halt on strikes against their respective capitals. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed readiness for substantive discussions, though the situation remains fragile following recent aerial assaults. Simultaneously, the U.S. military targeted three Iranian crude oil carriers—the M/T Downy, M/T Stark 1, and M/T Kylo—following ballistic missile attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on U.S. Navy warships. The strikes resulted in the destruction of the M/T Kylo and were intended to impose economic costs on the IRGC while safeguarding critical global shipping lanes.

In West Africa, regional security dynamics are shifting as Niger’s ruling junta increasingly leans on Russian support. Following a military mutiny at Air Base 101 in Niamey, Nigerien loyalist forces, aided by Russia’s Africa Corps, regained control of strategic installations. The junta has accused France of inciting the unrest, an allegation Paris has strongly denied. This escalation occurs as Ethiopia continues to navigate the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement, which seeks to formalize the cessation of hostilities and the disarmament of Tigrayan forces after two years of devastating conflict.

On the home front, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that the Mahama administration has completed the evacuation of 1,900 Ghanaians affected by xenophobic violence in South Africa. The final group of returnees was welcomed in early September, concluding a two-phase operation supported by President Mahama. The government has committed to providing reintegration packages, including healthcare and financial aid, to those displaced by the violence. While the mission was successful, Minister Ablakwa noted the somber loss of four Ghanaians during the crisis, with a full report expected to be presented to the Foreign Ministry next week.

Rounding out the week’s political developments, former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma is set to return home after treason charges against him were dropped, signaling a move toward national cohesion ahead of future elections. Conversely, in Tunisia, the arrest of investigative journalist Mohamed Yousfi has raised concerns regarding a crackdown on critics of President Kais Saied’s administration. Meanwhile, in legal news reaching across borders, Romanian prosecutors have officially indicted Andrew and Tristan Tate on charges of human trafficking and sex crimes involving minors, following years of investigation.
