President Mahama Embarks on Volta Regional Tour Amid Nationwide Infrastructure Push and Enhanced Sanitation Efforts

President John Dramani Mahama has commenced a high-stakes 'Resetting Ghana Tour' in the Volta Region, focusing on economic recovery, infrastructure, and direct citizen engagement. Scheduled for mid-July, the President’s itinerary includes critical inspections of development projects, most notably the proposed redevelopment of the Ho Sports Stadium into a FIFA Category B-standard facility. This visit, supported by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu and local media partners, aims to provide transparency on government achievements while addressing community concerns regarding socio-economic policies and regional growth. The tour also features the sod-cutting for a new 24-Hour Economy Market, reflecting a broader strategy to stimulate local trade and job creation.

Parallel to the presidential tour, the government is advancing significant infrastructure projects designed to transform national connectivity. Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza confirmed progress on the 1.5-kilometer Dambai Bridge and the 3.6-kilometer Afram Bridge, which are set to become the longest over-water structures in Ghana's history. Meanwhile, Parliament has secured the nation’s international financial footprint by approving a 17.25 million, 150-year lease renewal for Regina House in London, the headquarters of the Ghana International Bank. Local development is also surging, with the Bono East Region securing 310 acres for government institutions and Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey briefing traditional authorities on a modern 24-hour market project at Agbogbloshie.

The government is also addressing urgent public safety and welfare issues following recent devastating floods. In response, a national cleanup exercise led by President Mahama and supported by Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim has been extended to ensure sustained environmental hygiene. Authorities in Ga East have set a strict July 16 deadline for the removal of illegal structures on waterways to prevent future disasters, following 11 fatalities in the area. To support these efforts, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has announced a significant wage increase for sanitation sweepers, raising monthly pay from GHS 250 to GHS 800. Additionally, Members of Parliament and local officials have been active in providing relief items to displaced families in Hodzoga and other flood-affected communities.

Institutional accountability and service delivery remain central to the current governance agenda. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has directed the Ghana Statistical Service to begin publishing quarterly employment data to provide a transparent measure of job creation. This drive for efficiency is echoed by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council’s new ‘5 Ps’ leadership framework—Purpose, Punctuality, Productivity, Professionalism, and Performance—aimed at improving district assembly operations. These efforts are complemented by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), which recently reported a near-perfect 99.56% resolution rate for utility complaints in the Volta and Oti regions, signaling a robust commitment to improving public service delivery across the country.
