Lionel Messi has once again etched his name into the history books, setting a remarkable new FIFA World Cup record during Argentina's 3-1 triumph over Jordan in Dallas. Despite starting the match on the substitute bench, the legendary captain made a decisive impact after being introduced in the second half. Messi's 80th-minute free-kick was his sixth goal of the 2026 tournament and marked the seventh consecutive World Cup game in which he has found the back of the net, a feat that sets a new milestone in the history of global football. Having already secured the top spot in their group, Argentina utilized the match to rotate their squad, making nine changes to the starting eleven. The scoring began with a free-kick from Giovani Lo Celso, followed by a successful penalty conversion by Lautaro Martinez to give the Albiceleste a comfortable early lead. Jordan managed to briefly threaten a comeback when Mousa Altamari scored to reduce the deficit, but Messi’s late brilliance restored the two-goal advantage and ensured a smooth finish for the defending champions. Beyond the record, Messi's latest strike has bolstered his position in the race for the adidas Golden Boot, where he currently maintains a two-goal lead over several top competitors. Argentina now turns its attention to the knockout stages, with a Round of 32 fixture scheduled against Cabo Verde this coming Friday. The match is set to take place in Miami, where the team will look to maintain their momentum as they progress further into the competition.
