Lionel Messi Mourns Death of Father Jorge Messi Amidst Reports of 2026 World Cup Assassination Plot

Lionel Messi, the legendary Argentine footballer and current Inter Miami star, is navigating a period of profound personal loss and heightened security concerns. In early August 2026, it was confirmed that his father and longtime agent, Jorge Messi, passed away at the age of 68 in Rosario, Argentina. This tragic development comes as law enforcement agencies in the United States uncover a "chilling" assassination plot targeting the world-renowned athlete ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The dual developments have cast a somber light on the preparations for what many expect to be Messi's final global tournament. Jorge Messi died on August 7 following ongoing health issues that had seen him hospitalized earlier this year. As his son's primary business manager and representative, Jorge played an indispensable role in Lionel’s ascent to footballing immortality, most notably facilitating the pivotal trial at FC Barcelona in the early 2000s. Tributes have poured in from across the globe, with the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and Newell’s Old Boys expressing their deepest condolences. While Jorge's career as an agent was occasionally marked by controversy, such as the 2016 tax evasion case in Spain, he remained Lionel's most trusted advisor and the architect of his professional legacy. In addition to this personal bereavement, a security dossier from U.S. police has revealed specific and severe threats against Messi’s life. The reports detail an alleged plot involving an armed attack and the planned use of homemade explosives during the upcoming World Cup. Security analysts describe these threats as the most significant of the tournament, prompting immediate concerns regarding the safety of the Argentine captain and the overall security protocols for the event. The dossier underscores the immense pressure on North American security forces to safeguard high-profile athletes in an increasingly complex global environment. As Messi grieves the loss of his father, the footballing world remains watchful of how these security challenges will be addressed by FIFA and local organizers. The absence of Jorge Messi leaves a significant void in Lionel's inner circle at a time when he faces unprecedented external threats. Moving forward, the focus will likely intensify on the protective measures surrounding the 2022 World Cup winner, ensuring that his participation in the 2026 tournament is defined by his sporting excellence rather than security vulnerabilities. For Messi, balancing his private mourning with his public responsibilities will be the ultimate test of his resilience.
