Rare Michelangelo Foot Sketch Sells for $23 Million Following Surprise Discovery in Family Collection
•2 min read•1 source
A rare and previously unknown sketch by the Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo has fetched a staggering $23 million (£16.9 million) at a Christie’s auction, far exceeding its initial estimates. The small drawing, which depicts a foot, was identified as a preparatory study for the Libyan Sibyl, one of the iconic figures featured on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. This discovery has sent ripples through the art world, as authenticated works by Michelangelo seldom appear on the open market, especially those directly linked to his most famous masterpiece. The sketch provides a unique glimpse into Michelangelo’s meticulous artistic process, showing how he focused on anatomical precision for even the smallest details of his grand compositions. The Libyan Sibyl is renowned for her complex, twisting pose, and this foot study illustrates the preparatory work required to achieve such dynamic movement. The history behind the sketch is as remarkable as the artwork itself. The anonymous owner had inherited the piece from his grandmother and held onto it for years without realizing its immense historical and monetary value. Seeking a valuation, the owner approached the auction house Christie’s, where experts began a rigorous authentication process. Utilizing advanced technology such as infrared reflectography, scholars were able to confirm the artist's hand, dating the work to approximately 1511-1512. This period coincides with the height of Michelangelo’s career when he was laboring over the monumental frescoes of the Vatican. The sale highlights the enduring allure of Old Master drawings and the potential for world-class treasures to remain hidden in private collections for generations. As this piece transitions from a private family heirloom to a significant addition to the documented Michelangelo canon, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing legacy of the High Renaissance and the high stakes of the international art market.
