Nana Akua Dokyiwaa Karikari Leads Youth Empowerment at Ghana’s Inaugural EARTH Summit

On September 26, 2026, the University of Ghana’s Mensah Sarbah Hall became the hub for Ghana’s first-ever EARTH Summit, a landmark event dedicated to mobilizing the youth for environmental preservation. Organized by the Planeteer Alliance—an initiative of the Captain Planet Foundation—in collaboration with YFM Ghana, the summit was hosted by Nana Akua Dokyiwaa Karikari, a young leader and member of the Alliance. The gathering aimed to shift environmental advocacy from abstract concepts to practical, everyday actions, positioning young Ghanaians as the primary stewards of the nation's natural resources.

The summit featured a series of hands-on workshops designed to equip participants with tangible skills for community-level impact. A highlight of the day was the tree-growing session led by Mr. Asare Kuffour, where participants actively planted Veitchia palm seedlings. Unlike traditional tree planting, the focus was on "growing," emphasizing the long-term care and nurturing required for environmental sustainability. In tandem, Heneba Kwadwo Safo facilitated a specialized session on responsible waste management. Through interactive games and source separation exercises, attendees learned the critical importance of waste segregation, providing them with a blueprint for managing refuse more effectively in their own neighborhoods.

Addressing the assembly, Nana Akua Dokyiwaa Karikari underscored the power of individual initiative, reminding the young audience that environmental protection does not always require massive institutional support but can start with simple, personal choices. The event served as a formal introduction to the Planeteer Alliance for many, highlighting how they could join a global network of young environmentalists. Karikari’s leadership emphasized the summit's core message: that the youth are not just future leaders but current actors capable of driving significant change through consistent advocacy and practical stewardship.

To ensure the summit’s lessons extended beyond the one-day event, participants were provided with seedlings and educational resources to continue their environmental efforts at home. By blending theoretical knowledge with practical application, the inaugural EARTH Summit has set a precedent for youth-led environmental education in Ghana. The organizers hope this initiative will catalyze a nationwide movement of "Planeteers" committed to tackling climate change and pollution through local action, ultimately fostering a more sustainable and environmentally conscious generation.
