National Security operatives in the Ashanti Region have arrested 15 suspects and impounded heavy machinery during a targeted swoop on illegal sand-winning activities along the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. The operation, which took place on October 14, focused on the Sewua-Donyina-Appiadu area where unauthorized excavation has been reported. Security forces seized six trucks and a wheel loader found at the scene, which were allegedly being used to harvest sand from the shoulders and sections of the major transport corridor. The enforcement action reportedly involved significant drama, with reports of a high-speed chase and the firing of warning shots to bring the operation under control. The 15 male suspects were caught in the act of extracting sand, a practice that has caused visible damage to the newly completed road infrastructure. Authorities noted that the excavation activities are compromising the structural integrity of the highway, which serves as a critical link between Accra and Kumasi. Following the arrests, the suspects were transported to the National Security headquarters in Accra for further investigation and questioning. Although some of the arrested individuals claimed to have legal authorization for their activities, they were unable to produce the necessary permits or documentation to substantiate their claims to the security team. Government officials and local authorities have expressed concern over the persistent threat of illegal sand-winning to multi-million cedi infrastructure projects across the country. In response to the damage observed at Sewua, security agencies have indicated plans to intensify patrols along the expressway to deter further encroachment and ensure the protection of public assets.
