Tragedy in Nchiraa: Two Dead and 14 Injured as Gunfire Mars Yam Festival Celebration

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, the annual Yam Festival in Nchiraa, located in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region, turned into a scene of tragedy as gunfire erupted during the festivities. The violence resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left 14 others injured, including a police officer. The disturbances broke out shortly after the conclusion of the formal festival program, shocking the local community and transforming a vibrant cultural celebration into a period of mourning.

The disturbances reportedly began around 5:30 p.m. as the Nchiraahene, Nana Tabiri Yaw II, and his sub-chiefs were being escorted through the town toward the palace. As the traditional procession moved through the streets, unexpected gunshots rang out, causing immediate chaos and panic among the gathered crowd. While the specific motive for the shooting has not yet been confirmed, the gunfire directly targeted the area surrounding the procession, leading to multiple casualties among participants and bystanders.

Following the incident, the injured victims were rushed to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The bodies of the two deceased individuals have also been deposited at the hospital's mortuary pending autopsy. In response to the bloodshed, the Bono Regional Police Command took swift action to restore order. Law enforcement officials have since intensified patrols within Nchiraa and the wider Wenchi Municipality to prevent any further escalation of violence or potential retaliatory acts.

While calm has officially been restored to the community, the police are actively pursuing those responsible for the disorder. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and are calling on residents to provide any information that could assist in identifying the suspects involved in the shooting. The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the security challenges that can arise during major traditional gatherings, leaving the people of Nchiraa to grapple with the aftermath of a celebration overshadowed by violence.
