In a decisive move to combat escalating violence from armed groups, Niger's military rulers have announced a general mobilization of citizens. This decree, issued following a cabinet meeting, comes in the wake of a coup in July 2023 and aims to bolster defense efforts against threats from factions linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS. Reports indicate that nearly 2,000 casualties have occurred due to ongoing conflicts, prompting authorities to prioritize national integrity and citizen protection. The military government has previously expelled foreign troops and strengthened alliances with regional military leaders in Mali and Burkina Faso to address these security challenges effectively. Citizens are now mandated to comply with requisition orders as part of the mobilization efforts, reflecting the government's commitment to restoring stability in the region.
