Troops of the Joint Task Force (North West), operating under Operation Fansan Yamma, have conducted a successful clearance operation against Lakurawa terrorists in Sokoto State. During the mission on October 15, soldiers moved through the Waria Forest to target known militant hideouts. This operation is part of an intensified effort by the Nigerian military to eliminate extremist groups and secure the northwestern borders of the country.
The encounter in the forest led to the neutralization of several terrorists, with specific reports from the scene confirming that at least two fighters were killed during the exchange of fire. Following the skirmish, military personnel destroyed the militants' camps, which served as operational bases for planning and executing attacks in the region. The destruction of these facilities is intended to degrade the group's capacity to organize and sustain long-term insurgencies in the Sokoto area.
In addition to the casualties inflicted on the terror group, the troops recovered a significant cache of equipment from the enclave. This included four AK-47 rifles, a large quantity of ammunition, and communication devices used by the fighters to coordinate their activities. The soldiers also seized multiple motorcycles—with reports indicating between five and eight units were recovered—which the Lakurawa fighters utilized for mobility and rapid escape during their raids on local communities.
The successful raid in the Waria Forest underscores the military's ongoing commitment to restoring order in parts of Nigeria affected by banditry and terrorism. Operation Fansan Yamma continues to maintain a high operational tempo, with further clearance missions planned to identify and eliminate remaining extremist cells. Security officials emphasized that removing such groups is critical for the safety of local residents and the long-term stability of the region's economy.
