Nigerian Navy Ship Delta Seizes 80,000 Litres of Stolen Crude in Joint Niger Delta Operation

Personnel from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, in a strategic partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have successfully intercepted and recovered approximately 80,000 litres of stolen crude oil. The joint operation, which unfolded over a two-day period between Monday and Tuesday, also resulted in the apprehension of three individuals suspected of drug trafficking. This recent crackdown took place within the intricate network of the Niger Delta creeks, a region that remains the frontline in Nigeria’s persistent battle against maritime crime and resource theft. The operation highlights an increasing trend of inter-agency collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and narcotics officers to address the multi-faceted nature of crime in the Delta region. By combining resources, the NNS Delta and NDLEA were able to conduct a sweep of the creeks that targeted both the illegal siphoning of the nation’s petroleum resources and the movement of illicit substances. The recovery of the 80,000 litres of crude represents a significant blow to the local illegal refining supply chain, which often relies on stolen raw materials to produce substandard fuel products. Crude oil theft continues to be a major challenge for Nigeria’s economy, leading to substantial revenue losses and severe environmental degradation in host communities. The Nigerian Navy has intensified its presence in the Niger Delta to deter bunkering—the local term for oil theft—and to dismantle the infrastructure used by criminal syndicates. These latest arrests and seizures are part of a broader, sustained effort by the federal government to stabilize the oil-producing regions and ensure that the country’s primary export remains protected from sabotage and theft. Following the successful recovery, the suspects and the seized products are expected to undergo further investigation as authorities work to trace the broader networks involved in these illegal activities. This operation underscores the ongoing commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces to maintain law and order in the maritime domain. As the government continues to deploy ongoing measures to combat these threats, the focus remains on enhancing surveillance and response capabilities to safeguard the Niger Delta's economic and ecological integrity.
