Nollywood Bids Farewell to Icon Olu Jacobs and Mourns Sudden Loss of Rising Star CJay Nwoks

The African film industry is currently in a deep state of mourning as it navigates the loss of two distinct generations of talent within a single month. On Friday, October 20, 2026, the industry gathered in Lagos to pay its final respects to the legendary veteran Olu Jacobs, who passed away on September 16 at the age of 84. This solemn occasion comes amidst the fresh shock of the untimely death of Chijioke Nwokafor, popularly known as CJay Nwoks, a 30-year-old rising star who died on September 30, 2026. Together, these losses represent a significant void in the creative landscape of Nollywood, spanning over five decades of artistic excellence and future potential.

The funeral service for Olu Jacobs was a high-profile event held at This Present House in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. It drew a crowd of family members, industry colleagues, and high-ranking government officials, including the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, First Lady Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun. Attendees, following a specific request to wear shades of green, witnessed a poignant celebration of a career that spanned more than fifty years. Notable moments included a musical performance by entertainment entrepreneur Dare Art Alade and the presentation of the veteran actor's biography by his son, Olugbenga Jacobs. The service followed an emotional "Night of Tributes," where many in the film fraternity reflected on Jacobs' immense contributions and mentorship.

While the industry celebrated the long and full life of Jacobs, it was simultaneously rocked by the sudden passing of CJay Nwoks. The 30-year-old actor died in a hospital in Badore, Lagos State, under circumstances that currently remain unclear. The news was first brought to public attention by prominent actress and producer Nkechi Blessing, who had recently cast Nwoks as the lead in her upcoming film. In a show of mourning, Blessing announced that the project would no longer be released, a testament to the integral role the young actor played in the production and the profound impact his loss has had on his collaborators.

The juxtaposition of these two deaths highlights the fragility and transition within the Nigerian cinematic world. While Olu Jacobs is remembered as a titan who helped lay the foundations of the modern industry, CJay Nwoks represented the promising future of Nollywood storytelling. As a private burial is prepared for the veteran icon and the industry seeks answers regarding the passing of Nwoks, the creative community continues to offer tributes. These events serve as a sobering reminder of the legacy left by the pioneers and the precarious nature of life for those still ascending the heights of their careers.
