The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has finalized the vetting of 47 aspirants for its upcoming 2026 national officers’ elections, scheduling the crucial balloting process for Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The exercise, which will take place at the party’s headquarters in Accra, will determine the order of candidates on the ballot paper. This follows a rigorous vetting process held from August 31 to September 3, where all 47 candidates were cleared to contest for nine leadership positions, including National Chairman, General Secretary, and National Organiser. The National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) has emphasized its commitment to a transparent and fair process, urging all aspirants to maintain party unity as they transition into the final phase of the internal elections.
Amidst these preparations, the campaign of Collins Nuntwiri Nuamah, an aspirant for the National Treasurer position, has been temporarily suspended following a vehicle accident. The incident occurred on the night of September 5, 2026, as Mr. Nuamah and his team were returning from campaign activities in the Afram Plains North and South. The accident took place on the Kwahu road in the Eastern Region around 8:30 PM. Mr. Nuamah, who was scheduled to campaign in Atiwa East and West the following day, is currently seeking medical attention. While his campaign is on hold, updates regarding his condition and the resumption of his tour are expected in the coming days.
The upcoming elections are characterized by high competition, particularly for the National Vice-Chairperson role, which features 13 candidates, and the National Organiser position, which has eight aspirants. The NOEC has instructed that candidates or their authorized representatives must be present at the party headquarters for the balloting. This period of internal reorganization is seen as a vital step for the NPP as it structures its leadership under the current political landscape, where the party now serves as the primary opposition to the administration of President John Mahama.
However, the electoral season has not been without controversy. The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has formally condemned an assault on Adom FM and TV reporter Obrempongba Benjamin Kwame Owusu by military personnel during the Nkwanta South NPP constituency elections. GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour highlighted that the journalist was attacked while performing his duties on July 11, 2026, leading to injuries and hospitalization. The GJA is calling for a full investigation and greater accountability from security forces, stressing that the safety of the media is essential for a free and democratic society, especially during politically sensitive events such as party elections.
