The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially commenced the vetting process for 47 aspirants seeking various national executive positions following the closure of nominations on August 29, 2026. These internal elections, scheduled for October 3, 2026, are a critical step for the party as it restructures to challenge President John Mahama’s administration in the 2028 general elections. Out of the 50 members who initially picked up forms, 47 successfully filed their nominations, marking the start of a high-stakes transition period for the country's primary opposition party.
The race for the National Chairmanship has drawn significant attention, featuring heavyweights such as former Chairman Paul Afoko, former General Secretary John Boadu, Boakye Agyarko, and Sammy Crabbe. However, the field narrowed slightly when Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the former Ashanti Regional Chairman, withdrew his candidacy for the top post. In other key contests, incumbent General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong faces multiple challengers to retain his seat, while former Information Minister Nana Akomea has filed to contest for the First Vice Chairman position. Akomea, a former MP for Okaikwei South, is part of a competitive field of 13 aspirants vying for three vice-chairmanship roles.
The vetting committee, chaired by Cecilia Abena Dapaah, began its four-day assessment on August 31, 2026. While most positions are fiercely contested, Dennis Miracles Aboagye is set to proceed unopposed as the National Communications Director after Evans Kodom stepped aside. Other notable departures from the race include Perpetual Ekua Lomokie Akwada, who failed to submit her forms for National Women Organiser by the deadline. The National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) has emphasized its commitment to a transparent and credible process, urging all candidates to maintain party unity throughout the vetting and subsequent campaigning.
Beyond the immediate executive elections, the NPP is already looking toward the 2028 presidential ticket. Patrick Yaw Boamah, the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, recently expressed his readiness to serve as the running mate to flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stating his desire to help the party regain power. As the NPP prepares to elect its new national leadership in October, these internal dynamics will shape the party’s strategy. The successful candidates will be tasked with managing the party's machinery and bridging internal divisions to present a unified front in the next national election cycle.
