The Bono Regional Directorate of the National Youth Authority (NYA) has issued a stern warning regarding the escalating rates of drug abuse among young people in Ghana, describing the trend as a significant threat to the country’s socio-economic future. Speaking at the launch of Youth Month activities in Kwatire, the Bono Regional Director of the NYA, Desmond Asaase, emphasized that the surge in substance misuse requires immediate and sustained intervention from all stakeholders to safeguard the potential of the younger generation.
To address this growing crisis, the NYA has announced the commencement of an extensive region-wide sensitization campaign. This initiative aims to educate young people across various sectors, including schools and churches, about the devastating consequences of narcotics. Mr. Asaase specifically pointed to a rise in severe health complications linked to drug abuse, such as liver and kidney damage, which are increasingly appearing in younger populations. The authority is calling on the youth to take personal responsibility for their health and to act as peer advocates against the use of illicit substances.
The campaign launch was integrated with a community clean-up exercise, highlighting the link between personal health, youth discipline, and environmental sanitation. The event saw active participation from local students, residents, and traditional leaders, showcasing a collective commitment to community well-being. During the exercise, the Municipal Chief Executive pledged further support for the initiative by promising improvements to local infrastructure and waste management systems to ensure that the environment remains conducive to healthy living.
As the NYA rolls out its educational programs, the emphasis remains on a holistic approach to youth development that combines health awareness with civic responsibility. By targeting community hubs like religious institutions and educational centers, the authority hopes to build a resilient frontline against drug proliferation. The success of these efforts will depend on continued collaboration between government bodies, local leadership, and the youth themselves to ensure a drug-free and prosperous future for the Bono Region and the nation at large.
