Vice President Opoku-Agyemang Promotes Economic Stabilization Abroad as Domestic Political Leaders Debate Accountability and Civil Discourse

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has concluded a series of high-level engagements in the United States, highlighting the Mahama administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline and institutional reform. Addressing the Ghanaian community in Maryland and delivering a keynote at the Sister Cities International 70th anniversary in Washington, D.C., the Vice President detailed the government's strategy to navigate challenging economic conditions. She emphasized the reduction of ministerial positions and targeted investments in education and infrastructure as key pillars of the current administration’s agenda. Furthermore, she advocated for "city diplomacy," urging local governance structures like Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies to leverage international partnerships for sustainable trade and innovation.

While the Vice President focused on international relations, the domestic political landscape saw significant calls for a shift in political culture. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 elections, has urged a transition toward issue-based politics over personal attacks and legal confrontations. His remarks followed the arrest of a National Democratic Congress (NDC) organizer for allegedly publishing false news—a prosecution Dr. Bawumia clarified he did not initiate. He urged the police to discontinue such actions, reaffirming his support for free expression and constructive debate. Simultaneously, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Chief of Staff to Dr. Bawumia, expressed concerns regarding the increasing trend of journalists accepting government appointments, arguing that such practices could compromise the media’s role in holding the executive accountable.

The theme of institutional integrity was further underscored by Elsie Appau-Klu, Technical Advisor to the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), who was recently honored with the "Excellence in Public Policy and Governance" award at the 16th African Achievers Awards in London. Speaking at the ceremony held at the House of Lords, Appau-Klu emphasized that Africa's development hinges on strong institutions and sound governance. She highlighted ongoing modernization reforms at the GRA designed to enhance tax compliance and fairness, dedicating the recognition to the GRA staff and Ghanaian taxpayers. Her call for greater self-reliance and resource mobilization aligns with the broader national effort to stabilize the economy through internal efficiency.

Complementing these discussions on governance and accountability, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has moved to strengthen its relationship with the media to ensure industrial harmony. NLC Executive Secretary Dr. Bernice Welbeck clarified that many industrial disputes are exacerbated by public misconceptions regarding labor laws, particularly concerning the legality of strikes. By partnering with journalists to improve reporting accuracy on dispute resolution procedures, the Commission aims to prevent sensationalism that could escalate tensions. Collectively, these developments reflect a multifaceted effort across Ghana's political and administrative spheres to prioritize policy-driven leadership and institutional transparency.
