Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has unveiled three pivotal legal instruments designed to strengthen Ghana’s social safety nets and advance gender equality. At a ceremony held in Accra on October 7, 2026, the Vice President launched the Social Protection Act, 2025, the Social Protection Regulations, 2026, and the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Regulations, 2026. These frameworks, introduced under the theme ‘Building an Inclusive, Equitable and Resilient Ghana: From Legislation to Results,’ aim to provide a more robust legal foundation for supporting vulnerable populations across the country.
During the unveiling, the Vice President emphasized the importance of these frameworks in improving the lives of citizens, specifically focusing on social assistance and empowerment for women. The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection added that the government is committed to ensuring the effective implementation of these laws. Key priorities include making the legislation accessible to all citizens and maintaining transparency in the monitoring of social progress to ensure that resources reach the intended beneficiaries.
Representatives from UNICEF and the World Bank attended the launch, offering praise for Ghana’s commitment to legislative reform in the social sector. The development partners highlighted that the success of these instruments will rely on the use of accurate, reliable data and the integration of social services with livelihood support. They noted that these steps are essential for creating sustainable pathways out of poverty for the most marginalized groups in society.
The event served as a major milestone for Ghana’s social policy, bringing together stakeholders from across the public and private sectors. As the country moves forward, the focus will transition from the legislative phase to practical execution and results. The government intends for these regulations to serve as a cornerstone for building a more resilient and equitable society where every citizen has access to the support they need.
