Douglas Acheampong's family demands justice for Akyem Hemang killing

The family of 29-year-old Douglas Acheampong is calling for a thorough investigation following his death, which was allegedly caused by military personnel in Akyem Hemang. During a one-week observance held on October 16, 2026, the grieving relatives appealed to the government to hold the responsible parties accountable and expeditiously investigate the incident. The family specifically requested that the state provide clarity and justice for the deceased young man who they believe was a victim of excessive force. The incident at the center of the demand occurred on August 26, 2026, during a military enforcement action in the Eastern Region. Reports indicate that the operation was targeted at a local immigration officer who was suspected of being an informant. It was during this activity that Acheampong was shot, leading to his untimely death and sparking significant distress within the local community. Acheampong’s mother and other family representatives have been vocal in their pursuit of accountability, stating that the victim was innocent and did not deserve to die. They urged the authorities to ensure that those who discharged the weapons are identified and prosecuted according to the law. The family emphasized that their call for justice is a necessary step to address the loss of a life they believe was taken without cause. As the community of Akyem Hemang processes the tragedy, the case has highlighted concerns regarding the conduct of security forces during internal operations. The family remains committed to seeking the truth as they proceed with further funeral arrangements. They hope that the government's response will demonstrate a commitment to the rule of law and the protection of citizens in their communities.
