The Embassy of Peru has officially opened the second edition of the Peruvian Film Festival at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) in Accra. The festival is designed to showcase the role of cinema as a vital tool for cultural diplomacy and to strengthen the creative and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Peru. During the launch event, filmmakers and industry stakeholders gathered to explore how storytelling can serve as a bridge between diverse cultures while fostering international cooperation.
Ghanaian filmmakers attending the event were encouraged to focus on creating authentic local narratives that reflect the nation's unique identity. Panelists emphasized that while local stories must be rooted in Ghanaian culture, they should be produced with a global audience in mind to attract international investment. Despite the Ghanaian government's recent allocation of funds to support the film industry, experts noted that creators continue to face significant challenges, particularly regarding market access and the visibility of their work on the global stage.
Prominent industry figure Kafui Danku-Pitcher spoke at the event, highlighting cinema's profound potential to foster relationships between nations. She and other speakers stressed that for the Ghanaian film industry to thrive, there must be a concerted effort to improve distribution networks and secure sustainable financing. The discussions underscored the necessity of connecting creative storytelling with the necessary financial and structural support to ensure that local productions can compete effectively in the international marketplace.
The festival serves as a critical platform for cultural exchange, providing an opportunity for Ghanaian students and professionals at UniMAC to engage with international cinematic traditions. By highlighting the intersection of film and diplomacy, the event points toward a future where Ghanaian cinema is better integrated into global distribution circuits, ensuring that authentic West African stories reach a wider audience while benefiting from cross-border creative partnerships.
