The family of legendary Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has officially requested the intervention of Nigeria's Department of State Services (DSS) to apprehend a TikTok content creator responsible for spreading false news regarding the actor's death. This move follows a wave of viral misinformation that caused widespread panic and distress among fans and colleagues across Africa. Both the family and the veteran actor's management team have categorically debunked the rumors, confirming that the iconic 'Things Fall Apart' star is alive and in good health, despite the malicious claims circulating online.
Leo Edochie, a prominent member of the family, took to social media to express the family's resolve to hold the perpetrator accountable for the emotional toll the hoax has caused. In a detailed Facebook post, Leo revealed that the family had already initiated contact with the DSS to track down the individual behind the deceptive video. To expedite the process, the family has offered a financial reward to anyone who can provide credible information leading to the identification and apprehension of the Tiktoker. This decisive action underscores the growing frustration of public figures against the rising tide of death hoaxes used by content creators to drive digital engagement and traffic.
The investigation by the DSS is currently underway as security agencies look into the digital footprint of the false report to locate the source of the misinformation. This incident highlights the darker side of social media culture, where fabricated stories can spread rapidly without verification. The Edochie family’s decision to involve state security services marks a significant escalation in how celebrities and their estates handle online defamation. It serves as a stern warning to internet users about the potential legal consequences of publishing unverified and distressing content for the sake of viral attention.
As the Nigerian entertainment industry and fans globally rally behind the Edochie family, the case has sparked a broader conversation about the need for stricter regulations on social media platforms and the ethical responsibilities of digital creators. Fans have been urged to remain vigilant and verify information from official sources before sharing sensitive news that can impact the well-being of public figures. The resolution of this case could set a significant precedent for how future instances of digital misinformation are handled by law enforcement and the judiciary in the West African sub-region.
