Plan International links climate shocks to rising teenage pregnancies

A global study by Plan International has revealed that climate-related shocks are fueling a significant rise in teenage pregnancy, child marriage, and violence against girls. The research, conducted across 52 low- and middle-income countries, surveyed 5,000 girls and young women aged 15 to 24. The findings highlight how environmental disasters create a ripple effect that devastates education and healthcare services, leaving young women increasingly vulnerable to social and health crises. The study reports that 10% of the young women surveyed had experienced unintended pregnancies specifically as a result of climate events. Furthermore, 36% of participants noted an increase in early marriages within their communities following climate disasters, while 28% reported rising levels of violence against women and girls. These figures underscore the breakdown of protective social structures and safety nets in the wake of environmental shocks. Disruptions to education emerged as a critical driver for these increased risks. When climate disasters strike, schools often close or become inaccessible, removing the primary protective environment for young girls. This lack of access to education, coupled with a severe decline in healthcare availability, prevents young women from receiving necessary reproductive health services. A majority of respondents indicated they struggled to obtain healthcare following disasters, directly contributing to the rise in early marriage and pregnancy. Plan International is calling for immediate action to integrate girls' health and safety into national climate adaptation plans. The organization emphasizes the need for climate-resilient education and healthcare systems that can withstand environmental shocks. By prioritizing the specific needs of girls and young women in at-risk communities, stakeholders can help mitigate the long-term socio-economic and health impacts caused by the escalating climate crisis.
